So, yesterday I took part in the Worcester Art Museum’s “One Day Residency” program – not exactly an elite club as it’s open to all, regardless of age (or talent)…but still, it got me out of the house and drawing. The project I assigned myself was to compile a collection of faces, organized yearbook style. I opted to stick with portraits of sculptures – it seems less like copying than using painted faces as subjects would. I found the Buddhas, with their mild, pleasant expressions, most satisfying to draw. Spending such quality time with the sculptures gave me time to contemplate the artistic differences between these ancient cultures, some working during the same period as others but on opposite sides of the world. Each face in the grid is slightly larger than one square inch; the entire piece measuring approximately 7×9 inches.
I’m offering prints of this drawing for sale over at my Etsy shop for $15.

Pencil botanicals

Two relatively quick drawings done yesterday at Tower Hill Botanic Garden:

Sketch074Tangle of vines

Sketch075Acacia flowers

GrassesThe first twelve in an ongoing series of miniature gestural drawings of ornamental grasses bent over in the snow and cold.  Each measures a mere 1.25 x 1.75 inches (teeny-tiny).  Unlike my more detailed botanical pieces, these works are studies in simplicity and efficiency of line.  Original art for only five dollars?  Yes, at .
